The onward march of widespread cannabis legalization continues to pervade much of North America. At the time of this writing, cannabis has been legalized for recreational use within 18 states as well as Washington D.C. Medical cannabis brings up the total of cannabis-friendly states to 36. It is clear that there is a very real culture shift currently ongoing and as a result, many myths about marijuana are being busted in the process.
Let’s take a look at a few common myths and misconceptions about cannabis so that you can better understand the benefits of this natural wellness solution.
Myth: Cannabis is Unpopular.
Reality: nearly 90% of Americans are in favor of some step toward cannabis legalization, at least according to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2021. The vast majority of adults polled in the survey showed overwhelming support for both medicinal and recreational use. Only 8% of respondents believe that cannabis should remain actively illegal for both medicinal and recreational use.
What’s more, we can see that there is both a generational gap and a political shift behind how respondents feel about cannabis. Adults over the age of 75 were more than 3x likely to believe that cannabis should remain illegal. Nearly 70% of adults under the age of 30 were in favor of full cannabis legalization.
Misconception: Cannabis is Dangerous
A 2019 National Survey targeting drug use and health information revealed that only 46% of U.S. adults admit to utilizing marijuana. This number falls far short of alcohol (sitting at 80%) and tobacco (sitting at 61%). Despite the disparity between cannabis use and alcohol/nicotine, cannabis continues to bear the vast brunt of misinformed rhetoric.
The bottom line, according to researchers at Healthline, is simple: nobody has ever died from overdosing on cannabis by itself. Bad reactions typically involve drinking water, relaxing, and waiting for the effects to wear off. On the other hand, alcohol directly contributes to more than 261 deaths every single day.
Reality: Party Lines Split Cannabis Popularity
While there are very few bipartisan issues that the American people will collectively agree upon, cannabis remains one of the closest subjects to achieve that broad acceptance. A research study conducted by the PEW Research Center in April of 2021 revealed that Democrats approved cannabis legalization over conservatives by a 72% to 47% margin. Similar shifts also appear within different age gaps with younger voters favoring outright legalization.
